Teaching Sound Waves with a Fun and Engaging FREE Experiment

Sound Waves Experiment for Grades 5 and 6

Teaching sound waves can be difficult. Use this hands-on experiment to help make the concept much more accessible. Plus, the outcome is super cool, creating a WOW experience in science class!

What Students Learn about Sound Waves

In this sound waves experiment, students use the scientific method to create a hypothesis and then experiment with sound. Students tap a spoon on a string against the table and listen to the sound. Then they repeat the experiment with their fingers in their ears. Astoundingly, the sound is quite different and much louder. Students learn from this that sound changes when it moves through a solid versus air and when it moves through different materials. They also gain experience using the scientific method and applying what they’ve learned.
